my final project of second year

.Character Concept – Marat/Sade

For our final project, we are staging Marat/Sade as performed by the inpatients of an insane asylum, with the unique twist of presenting the entire production through puppetry.

For my role, I collaborated closely with the costume department to develop a vivid and unsettling character: a paranoid prostitute suffering from advanced syphilis. This character is deeply unhinged, both physically and psychologically, embodying the extremes of paranoia, vulnerability, and raw sexuality.

The grotesque nature of the disease is reflected through costume and puppetry design, enhancing the hallucinatory quality of her presence on stage. Her erratic behavior and distorted perspective underscore the chaos and instability central to Marat/Sade’s themes of revolution, suffering, and madness.

final character look

The makeup design focuses heavily on textured skin effects to simulate syphilitic sores and lesions, combined with bruising, smudged dirt, and sweat detailing to create a raw, unfiltered look. The distressed costume and wild, matted hair further enhance the illusion of prolonged neglect and mental deterioration. The yellowed socks and soiled garments emphasize institutional confinement and the character’s dehumanized condition.

Set against a hauntingly decayed environment, the overall aesthetic is intentionally unsettling—designed to evoke both empathy and discomfort. This look exemplifies storytelling through character-driven special effects makeup and period-appropriate styling, aligning with the Expressionist and Brechtian tones of the play.

professional shots

Professional photography plays a crucial role in showcasing my work with precision and clarity. By using high-quality lighting, proper angles, and attention to detail, I can capture the full depth and texture of the prosthetic work. This not only highlights the intricacy of the design but also demonstrates the craftsmanship involved. Well-executed photos serve as a powerful tool for my portfolio, allowing potential clients and collaborators to fully appreciate the quality and skill behind each project.
