Madama Butterfly – Opera Makeup & Hair
Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly is a timeless and tragic opera set in early 20th-century Japan, telling the story of Cio-Cio San, a young geisha whose devotion and heartbreak unfold in a tale of love, betrayal, and cultural divide.
As part of the makeup and hair team for this production, I was responsible for the men’s chorus and assisted with the women’s ensemble. My work involved maintaining traditional, period-inspired looks that complemented the opera’s aesthetic and emotional depth. I also prepped, cleaned, and fitted wigs throughout the run, ensuring each performer’s appearance was consistent, polished, and stage-ready for every performance.
It was an absolute pleasure to work alongside the incredible designer Carole Dunne and her talented assistants. I felt very lucky to be part of such a creative team — and especially grateful to be invited back after previously interning with Irish National Opera (Gaiety Theatre and Bord Gais on earlier productions.
